Basque Culinary Center

The Faculty of Gastronomic Sciences of the Mondragon University and a research centre, the only one of its kind worldwide, make up the Basque Culinary Center, which opened its doors in September 2011.

This modern building spans 15,000 square metres and is located in the San Sebastián Technology Park, which is surrounded by nature. The design is the work of San Sebastián-based studio Vaumm, after they won the design ideas competition which was held for this project.

The exterior of the building resembles a stack of dish plates. Another interesting feature is that the building, which is U-shaped, and which blends perfectly with its surroundings, takes advantages of the unevenness of the terrain.

It is divided into five floors, which house classrooms, workshops, research laboratories, top-of-the-range kitchens, tasting rooms, offices and a conference hall with the capacity to hold 200 people, as well as other facilities.

The Basque Culinary Center has won third place in the Awards Project of the Year 2011, awarded by the portal platform architecture. He has also been a finalist in the Building of the Year Awards, granted by ArchDaily web.
